‘I don’t think it’s a slow revver, neither is it a fast revver, it’s somewhere in between,’ says skipper Gerrit van Komen about the Deutz RBA8M 528 in the Dutch inland barge Sjanie, on which he sails with Sjanie van Oost. The engine from 1965 has a power of 620 hp at 750 revs per minute. Is it a BAM Deutz? ‘Not in skipper parlance. The BAM Deutzes are the fast revvers, as we call them.’ Skipper Van Komen and his predecessors on the Sjanie increased the ease of use of the engine by making changes to the greasing-system.
