23 November 2018, Harvest – SHVL 777, LP, 33⅓ RPM, Remastered, Limited Edition, Purple Vinyl, 180 Gram, Newly Remastered from the Original Analogue Tapes and cut to vinyl at Half Speed at Abbey Road Studios. Remastered By – Andy Pearce, Matt Wortham Released 3 June 1970. The song ‘Child In Time’ is included in the fourth album of hard rock band Deep Purple under the title “Deep Purple in Rock”. This particular album was the first studio album of the band with Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass. In November 1970 ‘Child in Time part 1” was released as a 7” vinyl single in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. On the b-side of the single was the second part of the same song. It’s an anti-war song (it was written during the Vietnam’s War peak). The lyrics belong to singer Ian Gillan, who is amazing on vocals, while the song’s success also came from Jon Lord’s keyboards and Richie Blackmore’s guitar. The mold of the song, though, was the American psychedelic band It’s A Beautiful Day, that the year before released a song called ‘Bombay Calling’. Ian Gillan never hid that fact as he also mentioned in a 2002 interview: “There are two sides on this song, the musical and the lyrical. From the musical side, there was this song called ‘Bombay Calling’ by the band “It’s A Beautiful Day”. When Jon was playing it on the keyboard one day, it sounded fresh and original. It was good and we thought that if we changed it a bit, we could create something new. So we created the song using the Cold War as the main theme. The song actually reflected the mood of the moment and that’s why it became so popular. The incident happened in 1969, when Deep Purple were rehearsing in West London. “The words came to us easily because we knew the nuclear threat above our heads” said Gillan. This song was loved by millions of people in the world, including Lars Urlich of Metallica, who revealed that when he was 9 years old, his father took him at a Deep Purple concert and it changed his life. “I’ve listened to it 92.000 times and every time it sounds perfect”, he said at Rolling Stone magazine. For the massive fans of the band we should mention an important detail. ‘Child in Time’ was one of the last songs where guitarist Richie Blackmore used the Gibson ES-335, before he moved to Fender Stratocaster. ‘Child in Time’ was the main part of Deep Purple’s concerts during 1970-73 and later during 1985-88. However, the band played it seldom after 1995 because Gillan’s voice was not the thing that would make it sound amazing anymore. The song was used among others in the documentary ‘One Day in September’, referring to the massacre of the Olympics in Munich in 1972, winning an Oscar in 1999.
