In this talk, Lorena Arancibia Carcamo, a Research Scientist and Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, shares how scientists are developing an understanding of how disease progression occurs and what role genes play in the risk of any of us developing Alzheimer’s. Lorena also explains how we may now be a turning point for Alzheimer's disease, and how soon we'll be able to develop new therapies and offer hope to patients and their families. Over the course of our lives, over half of us will be devastated by Alzheimer’s disease, either by developing it ourselves, or caring for someone who has it. Her research shines a light on the complex multicellular processes within our brains that may cause this disease. #Alzheimer’s #Dementia #BrainHealth In this video 00:00 What is dementia? 05:49 The history of Alzheimer’s disease 10:16 What are amyloid plaques? 13:19 The genetics of Alzheimer’s disease 18:07 How do we study the brain? 22:04 Different cell types found in the brain 28:00 What research are we doing in the lab? 34:44 What does the future look like? About Crick Crash Courses Crick Crash Courses started life as talks for our staff, to help everyone working here, scientists and non-scientists, better understand the Crick's discovery research into how life works. We've now opened our doors to our crash course talks, giving everyone, everywhere, the opportunity to hear directly from our scientists as they investigate some of the most complex challenges in human health. The Francis Crick Institute The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research institute and independent charity.
