SPOILERS FOR THE FINALE Do NOT watch this if you have NOT seen the ending ...you have been warned... "And at once I knew I was not magnificent" sobbing Holy crap this drama has totally killed me. Just WAHHHHHH!!!!!!! I didn't see the ending coming, I had it totally planned out in my head how I thought everything was going to go down and...it didn't...and now everything is depressing. SPOILERS BELOW STOP READING NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE SERIES! Honestly, I thought if anybody would die, it would be Ueno Rie. It seemed like the writers were trying to quickly gain sympathy for her character in the final 6 episodes or so, in an attempt to get some tears shed after her death. I had come to terms with the possibility of her death (despite my serious shipping of her and Katsyama). BUT NO, that's not what happened. I knew they were too happy. I was really proud of the writers when that one guy talked KangTo out of doing the drama cliche of leaving the girl for her "own good." I should have known that the fact no mini drama was playing out between KangTo and MokDan in the last few episodes meant the end was coming. WHY DID MOKDAN HAVE TO DIE?!?! Right after their wedding too! Talk about wedding crashers, Shunji takes the cake, what with his F'ing shooting of the bride and all. I'll admit that I sobbed like a baby during the entirety of the death scene and it kept hitting me in the rest of the episode, like KangTo at her grave or when Shunji gave him the wedding picture :'( While I know that if KangTo had died I would have been just as, probably more actually, upset, but holy crap, his complete sense of loss over her death was almost too much to handle. That boy can act, that's for sure. He is insanely talented. And then Shunji... I feel so conflicted about Shunji, because um, HE KILLED MOKDAN!!! Yeah, he meant to shoot KangTo, but if he had truly loved her, he would never have wanted to cause her as much pain as losing KangTo would have. But somehow, I always have sympathy for his character. I love that he is not the cardboard cut-out evil villain of oh-so-many dramas. He is a broken, extremely flawed character, someone who never meant to be evil. BUT THEN HE JUST SHOOTS HIMSELF?! I'm glad that KangTo did not have to kill him, or that both of them didn't end up dying trying to kill the other or something, but still. I suppose that's the true difference between the two, Shunji took the cowards way out while KangTo chose to live on, working for the free Korea he and MokDan had both wanted. I love the parallelism employed in this drama- the death of KangTo's brother turns him into a hero, while the death of Shunji's brother transforms him into the villain. If you'll notice, in the first episode, when their still best friends, the two are practice fighting and Shunji is dressed in white while KangTo is in black. KangTo of course, transfers to white once he puts on the mask, and gradually we see Shunji's style progressing from gray to black. IDK, I thought it was a pretty brilliant metaphor for the change in their roles and personalities... And finally, wtf Ueno Rie, why would you reject the ever stoic Katsuyama?! His constant protection of her was awesome, and she just tosses him to the wind?!! Though...um...she was right, that looking into the eyes of someone who will never love you back sucks...she would know after all, what with all the KangTo drama...So, yeah fine, her leaving him makes sense, but STILL! Poor Katsuyama, he may have only spoken twice but he was AWESOME! The only good thing about this drama being so tragically over is that now I can go start one of JooWon's other dramas, either "Baker King KimTakGo" or "Ojakgyo Brothers." I still haven't decided, but I am looking forward to seeing JooWon in a role where he's not getting stabbed quite as frequently. If you finished this entire rant, congratulations, I just wasted part of your life :P Actually, it's totally awesome if you made it through my no doubt boring monologue. This is the only place I can really obsess and get all the FEELINGS out, so yeah...I think I'm done now, hope you enjoy the video. I tried to capture all of the important characters at some point or another, and even more than that, the glances we got at some true history of Korea under Imperial Japan...like when the girls were sent off as comfort women or the students were forced into joining the war. I loved these tragic portrayals of all that Korea suffered but then also highlighted by the country's indomitable spirit and their constant strive for freedom. Um, I don't normally ask this, but (if you made it this far in the description) I would seriously appreciate it if you left a comment. I worked really hard on this video (I apologize for the 5+ minutes), and I'd love to know what you think :) There, now I'm finished! Song: Holocene Artist: Bon Iver
