Bulgaria’s protests: a revolt against corruption, not the EU | Spasimir Domaradzki

According to Dr. Spasimir Domaradzki, a Senior Analyst with the Institute of Central Europe, who joined us on World Talks, the people out in the streets in Bulgaria are actually some of the most pro-European folks in the country. They’re not mad at Brussels – they’re fed up with their own leaders. The government’s 2026 budget plan triggered the first demonstrations, as higher taxes and social security changes don’t make anyone happy. But Domaradzki said that was just the spark. The real fire comes from years of frustration with corruption, abuse of power, and shady politics. Former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov still plays a big role in all this. Domaradzki called the current government basically a puppet of Borisov and added that the people of Bulgaria are angry because they feel he and his allies have turned politics into a personal power game. Bulgarians have watched leaders act like the rules don’t apply to them. Domaradzki mentioned the arrest of the mayor of Varna – held for months without real grounds – as a big turning point. That’s when many citizens realized, “Wait, if they can do that to him, what can’t they do?” It’s not just Sofia anymore. Protests have popped up in over 25 cities across Bulgaria.
