Item code: R3313 The 4F locomotives were based on Sir Henry Fowler’s Midland Railway 3835 design, which was introduced in 1911. Over the next 30 years or more the construction of these locomotives continued with little or no differences although The LMS constructed variants were left hand driven. By the time the last of the Class had been completed in 1941 some 772 had been built in total. The LMS Fowler 4F locomotives were originally designed as freight locomotives but were quite often used for passenger workings. The vast majority of the Class was used mainly on the London Midland tracks although many found their way onto all other Regions. Withdrawal of the Class commenced in 1959 and continued through to 1966 with three being preserved. LMS Class 4F No. ‘4323’ was built at the LMS St. Rollox Locomotive Works, Glasgow and was outshopped on the 31 January 1928. In March 1950 the number was changed to ‘44323’ which it maintained until the locomotive was withdrawn from service in October 1962.
