Anthony Holborne (1545-1602) was one of the premier composers of consort music during the Elizabethan period and was held in high esteem by Dowland, who dedicated at least one work to him. The two dances come out of the collection "Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other Short Aeirs" published in 1599, about half of which have names, though these don't necessarily mean very much. Obviously "The Image of Melancholly" is supposed to be wistful, as are many of the names in the collection including "The Teares of the Muses" and "The Funerals" but "The New-Yeeres Gift" is more upbeat. There is no specified instrumentation but these were likely intended for viols though they work equally well on recorders with a couple of minor edits here and there for notes that go out of range.
