How To Think About AI: A Guide for the Perplexed is Richard Susskind’s attempt to calm the noise around artificial intelligence and offer readers a disciplined way of thinking about it. Drawing on forty years of experience in law and technology, he explains what AI is and is not, why generative tools like ChatGPT are just one chapter in a much longer story, and how different futures – from helpful augmentation to serious harm – might unfold. Rather than predicting a single outcome, he gives readers a set of lenses and questions they can apply in their own contexts. In my review, I argue that this makes the book especially useful for leaders, lawyers, policymakers and parents who feel overwhelmed by hype and fear. It does not provide quick answers or technical deep dives, but it does reshape the conversation: from “Will AI save or destroy us?” to “How should we think about AI, and what responsibilities follow from that?” For South African and African readers navigating scarce resources and fragile institutions, that kind of clarity is invaluable.
