Will India stop buying Russian oil? That's a question that has been dodged and deflected ever since US President Donald Trump first posted on the India-US trade deal framework last week cutting tariffs on India's exports to US to 18% and later clarifying that the secondary tariffs of 25% are being eliminated too. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that India’s energy sourcing decisions will be guided strictly by national interest. Misri stressed diversification as key to energy security, noting India imports 80–85% of its oil and must guard against inflation and supply risks, against without confirming whether purchases from Russia will stop. As uncertainty continues, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India’s strategic petroleum reserves can meet demand for up to 74 days during a global crisis, close to the 90-day norm set by the International Energy Agency, and could be expanded further. With India being the world’s third-largest crude consumer and a major refining and export hub, the debate highlights how energy security sits at the heart of India’s economic and geopolitical strategy.
