🎤Speaker🎤 Prof Chris Binnie Chairman West Somerset Lagoon | Tidal Energy 💡Abstract💡 The proposed West Somerset Lagoon (WSL) is a tidal range energy generation scheme enclosing 80 km2 of the Bristol Channel, between Minehead and Watchet. The scheme is being designed by West Somerset Lagoon Ltd. (see: West Somerset Lagoon | Tidal Energy). hat would harness the power in the tides of the Bristol Channel , about 10m tidal range, to provide up to 2,500 MW of renewable power. That is comparable to a large nuclear power station. It will have many facets including potential impact on fish and birds but also many community benefits such as coastal flood defence and improved recreation in the lagoon enclosure. The lagoon is located 10 km west of the protected Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA) sites in the Severn Estuary and is well outside of the shipping channels to the key upstream ports of Cardiff and Bristol. The scheme is based on the proven technology of the La Rance scheme in Brittany, which has operated for over 50 years. WSL will use state-of-the-art triple regulated turbines and caisson designs. ✨About Prof Chris Binnie✨ Chris Binnie is a consulting engineer specialising in tidal range power and dam design with an emphasis on minimising environmental and community impact. Chris is a director and chair of West Somerset Lagoon Ltd. This proposes the 2.5 GW tidal range West Somerset Lagoon which is assessed being able to provide about 6.5 TWh/year of predictable, renewable and indigenous energy with a capital cost of about £11bn. This would also provide coastal protection to the low lying coast at Minehead and the cliffs near Watchet which have resulted in the closure of the B3191 coast road. WSL Ltd is a member of the Tidal Range Alliance and of Marine Energy Wales. Chris previously chaired the DECC Independent Engineering and Technical Advisory Board for the Severn Tidal Power Feasibility Studies 2008-2010, was a consultant to the Hendry Review of tidal lagoons, and was a consultant on the studies for the Peel Mersey Tidal Power Barrage, the Morecambe Bay Tidal Power Barrage, and the Wyre Tidal Power Barrage. Chris was a Panel Engineer under the Reservoirs Act for about 30 years and was responsible for the design of 3 dams over 50m high. Chris was President of the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management in its centenary year, is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and has been a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for over 30 years. He was also a main board director of WSAtkins plc and deputy chairman of Binnie Black & Veatch.Chris Binnie is a consulting engineer specialising in tidal range power and dam design with an emphasis on minimising environmental and community impact.
