Located in the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire, within the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire, and 18 miles north of Lincoln, is the town of Kirton in Lindsey. The town's name derives from a mix of Old English and Old Norse, meaning settlement/farm with a church. The 'in Lindsey' component was likely added to help differentiate it from other settlements of the same name, such as the village of Kirton near Boston. Lindsey is the name of an Anglo-Saxon kingdom that was centred around Lincoln and the surrounding areas. Geographically, Kirton in Lindsey is situated about a mile and a half west of the historic Roman road known as Ermine Street, or the A15 as it's known at this section today. This is famed for being claimed as the longest continuous straight stretch of any public road in the United Kingdom. Just west of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Andrew. This dates back to the 11th century with additions up to the 15th century and some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed. Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII, lived in Kirton in Lindsey with her first husband Sir Edward Burgh before he died in 1533. In 1849 the railway arrived in Kirton in Lindsey. The station of today (known as Kirton Lindsey) is situated on the Brigg Branch Line which runs between Sheffield and Cleethorpes. This service is extremely limited, however, with only five trains per week serving the town in each direction. Alternatively, the town is accessible via local buses from Lincoln, Scunthorpe, Brigg and various other nearby locations. In 1940 RAF Kirton in Lindsey opened, having previously functioned as an airfield for the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. It played a supporting role in the Battle of Britain while also functioning as a training and operations hub. The site eventually closed in 2012. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
