How to Stop School Bullying: How Parents Make Kids Victims

Dr. Ben Leichtling discusses how well-meaning parents sometimes turn their kids into bullying victims by teaching them ineffective ways to deal with bullies. Here are some things that parents often tell their kids about bullying and how to deal with it that are wrong or do not work: 1. Bullies are bullied at home, so they are hurting inside. You should accept what they do and forgive them and not do anything to make them feel bad. 2. Just ignore the bullies. If you don't pay attention to them, they will stop. 3. If you're nice, kind and reasonable to bullies they will stop being mean to you and will become your friends. 4. You should never fight back verbally or physically. If you do, you will only make the bullies bully you more. 5. Violence never solves problems. If you fight back against a bully, that makes you just as wrong as the bully. For your kid to effectively deal with bullying, he or she needs to be taught the things that do work. Some things that work include making lots of other friends that will stand up for you and each other, encouraging kids to intervene when they see someone being bullied, teaching kids how to get authorities involved when bullying doesn't stop, and, yes, fighting back verbally and physically, if necessary, to stop the bully in his tracks.
