This is a 27-minute video of pregame, game action, and postgame footage from the Oct. 2, 1974 Major League Baseball tilt between the Cleveland Indians and the Red Sox in Boston, won by the Tribe, 8-6. It is film from the WCVB Collection, transferred by Northeast Historical Film. Thanks to NHF for the OK to post it with watermarks; for information on obtaining a clean copy visit www.oldfilm.org. Channel 5's Chet Curtis does a report from Fenway Park on the final game of the season. So in addition to the cameraman getting lots of footage from the game, there's pregame and postgame, too. It's some incredible stuff, deserving of a tip of the cap to WCVB! The way I assembled the pregame is probably not exactly chronological, but the game is, and then I pulled aspects of Chet's interviews to recreate what his report might have looked like. Synopsis: Pregame: (00:00) Starter Gaylord Perry (W, 21-13, CG, HOFer) and wife-swapper Fritz Peterson are among the Indians playing some sort of weird glove-pepper (the Sox do it, too) .... Carlton Fisk (HOFer), recovering from a bad knee injury that season, taking reps at first base ... I believe that's Ned Martin (should be a HOFer) unpacking his briefcase before preparing for another broadcast ... A quick Don Zimmer sighting ... Among the short-timers trying to make an impression: No. 38, 3B Terry Hughes; No. 30, 1B Deron Johnson; No. 39, C Tim Blackwell, and No. 42, P Lance (not Roger) Clemons ... Young Fred Lynn (HOFer if he'd stayed in Boston) wearing his hat backwards while the Sox play glove-pepper ... Bill Lee being interviewed. Who woulda thunk it? Game: (09:05) We see most of the first two innings, during which Cecil Cooper steals home for the Sox ... Sherm Feller asking fans to observe the following American League rules at Fenway Park ... Then we skip to the fifth, where although we don't see his homer, we get Frank Robinson's (HOFer) trot in from third ... Then it's to the top of the seventh, when Leron Lee hits a two-run double that bounces around before a young left fielder Jim Ed Rice (HOFer) can grab it ... Said Rice scalds a two-run double of his own in the bottom of the eighth and Rick Burleson doubles him in to tie it at 6 ... Rusty Torres homers off Dick Pole leading off the ninth, and Oscar Gamble adds an RBI double, but not before swinging and missing so hard his helmet flies off and his awesome Afro (HOFer) appears ... Clemons comes in for the Sox and gets a double play ball and a popup ... Alas, nothing doing in the Sox ninth, and John Kiley (only man to play for Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics) serenades the departing fans with Take Me Out To The Ballgame one last time. Yaz (HOFer), Rico, and Luis (should be a HOFer) must have been given time off for good behavior, as I didn't see them once. Postgame: (22:56) Chet (HOFer) chats with Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson about what he'll do in the offseason. Is that enough for ya, pilgrims? Greatness all around, and I'm sure there are a few things I didn't notice. Box score in comments. Copyright WCVB. I don't claim the rights to, and don't profit from, this video.
