Stones River, a song written and performed by songwriter, impressionist painter, Frank Morgan, pays tribute to acts of kindness that display humanity across battlefields in times of war. "The Angel of Marye’s Heights," one such famous example where a confederate soldier risked his life to carry canteens to wounded union soldiers at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 1862. The moaning calls for water all cold night long, triggered a 19-year old confederate soldier to not ignore his enemies suffering. In war, there are rare moments like this when soldiers recognize humanity in an opponent. Morgan's Stones River song tells a similar tale of expressed humanity when Union and Confederate soldiers join in song from opposing river camps before engage- ment in a bloody battle come sunrise. Here's an article on their after dark battle of the bands. https://rutherfordtnhistory.org/bands... The American Civil War one of the deadliest in U.S. military history, resulting in nearly 700,000 casualties or 2% of the national population. In some cases, families were divided, especially those settled near the Mason Dixon line which separated southern slave states (Confederate Army) from the north (Union Army) where slaves were free. With this in mind, seeing humanity in the enemy, could have been a tad easier for those with cousins, brothers or uncles standing with the other side. The Battle of Stones River, also known as the Second Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, occurred December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863.
