Post-Vietnam War Peace-building & Reconciliation: A Path to Regional Stability Speakers: Mr. Jan Barry, Vietnam War Veteran and Peace Activist Mr. James A. Kurtz, Vietnam War Veteran and Active Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Moderator: Van Anh, CIPR Intern, Spring 2024 Coordinator: Dr. Indu Saxena The journey towards peace-building between the United States and Vietnam is a remarkable example of how former enemies can come a long way. With diplomatic normalization in 1995, both nations have made significant progress in strengthening their diplomatic relations and promoting cultural exchanges. The recent signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations is a clear indication of their commitment towards building a long-lasting partnership. The strategic partnership between the United States and Vietnam has significant implications for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. It is a testament to the power of diplomacy and cooperation in resolving historical conflicts and building a better future for all. By working together on common challenges, such as security, trade, and environmental protection, both nations can contribute to a more prosperous and secure region. How did this transformation occur, and what does it mean for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region? How do you think the reconciliation process between the U.S. and Vietnam has influenced the broader Southeast Asia and Indo-Pacific regions? Specifically, can lessons learned from this process inform peace-building and diplomatic strategies in current regional conflicts? What specific initiatives or approaches in education and dialogues do you believe are most effective in fostering reconciliation and understanding among generations unfamiliar with the Vietnam War's complexities? Reflecting on the U.S. experience in Vietnam, what lessons can be applied to current U.S. peace-building approaches in other post-conflict settings? How do you perceive the younger generation's engagement with the Vietnam War's history affecting the reconciliation process between the U.S. and Vietnam?
