Expert- Ambassador (Fmr.) Derek Mitchell Discussant- Dr. Indu Saxena, Senior Fellow Discussant- Mr. Christopher L. Kolakowski, Senior Fellow In the inaugural episode of INDO-PACIFIC OPTICS, Dr. Indu Saxena and Mr. Christopher L. Kolakowski discuss extensively the civil war in Myanmar and evolving security situation. Myanmar's political landscape has changed significantly since the military coup occurred three years ago, on February 1, 2021. As we approach the anniversary of this period, tremendous developments have been taking place. The evolving security situation will have a significant impact on the country, its people, and the wider Indo-Pacific region. Here are some of the questions that were discussed: As Myanmar's military junta continues to face opposition and protests from the public and the resistance alliances, China has emerged as a prominent mediator between the conflicting parties. China holds significant economic interests in Myanmar and has been a long-time ally of the military regime. Does China have strategic goals in mediating the conflict and attempting to gain leverage in its competition with the U.S. and allies in the Indo-Pacific region? Myanmar is a weak link in the U.S. Indo-Pacific construct. Do you think that the U.S. should be involved? If yes, what are the appropriate strategies for the U.S. to engage with the involved parties? Or, if not, how can the U.S. move forward with its relations with Myanmar? Myanmar has rejected the ASEAN's five-point consensus on the Myanmar crisis, and now the Lao, as ASEAN's new Chair, has recently sent its special envoy to meet with the Junta Chief. What are your thoughts on ASEAN's efforts to solve the problem? In light of the increasing control that insurgent groups have been exerting over various towns and regions, there is a growing concern about the eventual outcome of the Civil War in Myanmar. As the situation on the ground continues to evolve, what might the final resolution of this conflict be?
