Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention Project - Summary Video

Did you know that Lake Victoria provides livelihoods for 109,000 fishers in Tanzania? Many residents are at high drowning risk during their day-to-day work, often breaking hazardous conditions with poorly maintained equipment. Drowning risks in Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, are heightened due to unpredictable weather, inadequate safety measures, limited swimming skills among locals, economic pressures, and insufficient emergency response services. Sudden storms can create dangerous waves and currents, while the widespread lack of life jackets and overloading of boats increase the likelihood of accidents. Addressing these issues through safety equipment usage, enhanced weather forecasting and community education on swimming and water safety is crucial for reducing the high incidence of drownings in this region. In 2022, the RNLI and EMEDO launched the Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention Project to explore drowning risks and take action to reduce drowning deaths in the area. In 2023, EMEDO staff and local community members from Kome and Busekera were trained in collecting stories of most significant change, using participatory video. These community films represent the voices of fishers, other stakeholders and the local communities of Kome and Busekera on the shores of Lake Victoria. This summary film presents some of the key issues raised in both of the films created by each community.
