Battletech: The Overlord class DropShip (The Mechwarrior Dropship Guide) The Overlord class is one of the primary 'Mech transport DropShips in the Inner Sphere. Capable of carrying a full 'Mech battalion and a squadron of aerospace fighters, as well as most of the technical support for both, the nearly 10,000-ton vessel has proven its worth as a dedicated combat transport. Because of its versatility, the DropShip is among the most respected vessels in the Inner Sphere. Usually kept out of combat to minimize the risk to lose one of these expensive ships; they often serve when grounded as dedicated command stations and resupply bases in longer campaigns. These highly valued ships started to become scarce in the later Succession Wars, but rediscovered technology and refits have continued to keep them in service. The 36 BattleMech cubicles are set into the interior walls. Six large, high-speed cargo elevators facilitate loading and unloading of these machines. Also located inside the bay near the top end are six AeroSpace Fighter cubicles. A pair of large, ceiling-mounted cranes move these Fighters (and ‘Mechs, if needed) to and from these bays. The Overlord is employed primarily in large-scale planetary assault missions. Its role is to provide the main Battle-Mech assault forces that spearhead ground-based attacks. In this role, the DropShip is normally located just behind a screen composed of assault DropShips and Aero-Space Fighters. The Overlord can deploy its BattleMech cargo on the ground, in high atmosphere or in space. The last is the preferred option, as it limits the Overlord's exposure to combat. The craft is especially vulnerable in the atmosphere, where its spheroid shape is a major disadvantage. This requires the Drop-Ship to hold its position over the intended target zone as BattleMechs exit the ship and fall planetward. This procedure can be dangerous to both the DropShip and the 'Mech if there is too much enemy AeroSpace Fighter or combat DropShip activity in the area. Neither the hovering DropShip nor the dropping ‘Mechs can do much to protect themselves from ships and small craft. When a secure landing zone can be maintained, however, Overlords often land to reduce the risks to their BattleMech cargoes. Though this method reduces the loss of BattleMechs, it makes grounded DropShips vulnerable to ground-unit fire as well as fire from conventional aircraft and AeroSpace Fighters. If the Overlord can remain on the ground in relative safety, it is often used as a supply base for ground forces and as a coordinating command center. A few have been fitted with highly sophisticated electronics just for this purpose. All five Houses of the Successor States operate Overlord Class DropShips. Because of the vessel's relatively high price and maintenance cost, mercenary units and other private concerns operate only a handful. Battletech: The Mechwarrior Dropship Guide should provide basic information about Dropships and their role in the interstellar travel. If you are in a Successor State of the Great Houses, the Clan Occupation Zones or on Holy Terra. From the Inner Sphere to the Periphery and the Clan Homeworlds, every Mechwarrior can use this information to learn about Battletech lore and Battletech history. Drop-ships are the workhorse of interstellar travel. All-important classes will be introduced and their features (aerodyne/ spheroid, Docking Collar, KFFC Boom, Mech Bay, fighter cubicle, …) explained. You will see, that in the BattleTech universe, BattleMechs are not the pinnacle of technology. (This publication was approved by the Precentor Obeedah.) Praise the Word of Blake!
