Biophilic design is all the rage now in #architecture so how's this for elevating the use of natural materials in construction? Scientists from #NTUsg have developed wall tiles made from fungi and bamboo waste with a texture inspired by elephant skin that could help keep buildings cool in the face of rising temperatures. Mycelium, the root network of fungi, has low thermal conductivity which reduces the rate at which the material gains heat. The rough, wrinkled skin of elephants contains more surface area than smoother skin textures which helps in dissipating heat. Combining both of these properties together results in a tile that cools 25% faster than flat tiles and 70% faster in simulated rain, perfect for tropical climates. As these fungi tiles are biodegradable, they hold promise for being a #green and more #sustainable alternative to current synthetic insulating materials. #NTUsgResearch #NTUsgInnovation
