What is Substrate Inhibition? Substrate Inhibition is an important phenomenon for controlling the formation of products even when there is an excess of the substrate. In this phenomenon, an increase in the substrate concentration beyond a level results in a decrease in reaction rate. Substrate inhibition is governed by the phenomenon of uncompetitive inhibition, where, the substrate and inhibitor do not compete for binding to the enzyme. There are two different binding sites on enzyme, one for substrate and one for inhibitor but inhibitor only binds to the enzyme-substrate complex. In the case of substrate inhibition, the binding site for the substrate is similar to the binding site of inhibitor, but the Substrate binding site has a high affinity for substrate than the inhibitor binding site. When there is an excess of substrate, the substrate binds to substrate binding site as well as the inhibitor binding site which results in the inhibition of the reaction. Thanks, Happy Studying. Important points to note - 1. For substrate inhibition, the binding site for substrate and inhibitor should be similar. 2. Substrate binding sites should have a higher affinity for substrate than inhibitor binding sites. 3. Substrate inhibition only happens at a high concentration of substrate. #gatebiotech #csirnet #dbtjrf
