We headed back to the mighty Copper River this week with a goal to harvest 100 fish for our first subsistence fish camp trip. Our homestead in Alaska is remote, and as rural residents we are allowed subsistence fishing permits for up to 500 salmon. These fish numbers aren't for recreation, but survival. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to harvest these salmon and put them up for the winter. We didn’t waste any time, and worked ourselves to the bone to get these fish in our dip net and put them away for the coming year! What made this trip even better was the breathtaking scenery and wilderness that surrounded our campsite. Wild salmon were abundant in the river, the forest lush with food and medicine. We cooked over fires, put away hundreds of pounds of nutrient dense fish, and filled multiple freezers back at the homestead. Next comes another important task; processing and caring for the catch. We will be smoking, canning, and freezing for days. Our Sunday video (Homestead Kitchen) is all about how we put up these fish for winter, and we will show you how! Til next week, Dennis, Amy & Lena
