Transport is the major component of National development. There are four major and four minor modes of transportation available. Capacity of road and Volume of traffic are the major terms in traffic engineering which comes under transportation. Whenever the volume exceeds the capacity then traffic management becomes important. Solving the traffic problem is a time consuming process and not possible easily but it can be managed. There are two major components under traffic management such as traffic system management (TSM) and travel demand management (TDM). Using TSM, volume to capacity can be dragged to be lesser than one, for which various temporary measures to be followed. Adopting TDM one can plan to bring down the number of vehicles on the road. It has various components such as public transport, car sharing etc. Rapid technological development in networking, information technology and communication techniques induce the transport field to get benefit out of it. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is one among these technologies which comes under TSM. ITS is an application of electronics, communication and analytical tool in an integrated manner to facilitate traveller information, to increase safety and maximum utilization of transport facilities. ITS involve vehicles, drivers,passengers, sensors and communication technologies, which are interacting witheach other to link the infrastructure and provide improved safety to users. ITS is a well-known method to simplify or minimize traffic problems. It aims to achieve traffic efficiency, reducing environmental degradation, energy conservation, reduction in travel time and enhancing comfort and safety of the users with the help of communication technologies. Application of ITS involves data collection and analysis, operations, regulation and research for traffic management. ITS is classified based on the application at specific level, like vehicle level, infrastructure level. Here the key terms are sensors, information processors, communication, road messages, GPS updates and automated traffic signals. This video lecture presents the outline of ITS, its necessity, types and benefits.
