How you test Nitrates with the Sera GmbH Test Kit for aquariums and ponds

In this video I show you how to carry out the NO3 Nitrate Test using the Sera GbmH Nitrate Test Kit for the water of aquariums, ponds or pools where you rear fish or turtles, to ensure the levels of nitrate are within recommended limits and it is not dangerous or toxic for fish, turtles or any other inhabitant of your pond or aquarium. Although there are no studies about the effects of high levels of nitrate on turtles in water, least what levels are limiting, there are some studies about the effects on other organisms. These studies make us expect negative effects when nitrate in solution increases without control. It is known that babies under 6 months old can die from asphyxia if they drink water containing high levels of nitrate, because nitrate interferes with oxygen absorption by the blood. It is also known that pregnant women can transfer this condition to their unborn child, which is born underweight. Some children and adults also can suffer some minor effects. For these reasons in some countries the rulings have established a top limit of 45 mg/l of nitrate in drinking water. In aquariums, an excess of nitrates contributes to algal blooms and can cause the death of fish, especially those recently adopted.
