I had an enjoyable dialogue with my friend Dr Dwain Neil OBE about his autobiography, Dreams From My Life, and what stood out most was the warmth, humility, and purpose behind his remarkable journey. Dwain shared vivid childhood memories from Kingston, Jamaica — flying kites with his father, riding at the front of buses, and even recalling the smell of his first tomato. These simple yet powerful moments helped shape his lifelong love of learning and curiosity about the world. When he arrived in the UK, Dwain faced unfamiliar systems and expectations, yet went on to achieve twelve O-levels, becoming the first in his family to do so. He spoke candidly about the uncertainty he felt, and how trusting his own approach to learning helped him overcome barriers that once seemed insurmountable. A chance conversation with a university professor later led him into postgraduate study and ultimately to a PhD — something he describes as “pure luck,” but which was clearly also about openness to opportunity and the belief others placed in him. Dwain reflected on his time at Shell, where he gained vital business skills that later supported his own successful consultancy. But he was clear that leadership began much earlier — through family responsibility, scouting, and learning that leadership is ultimately about service. That philosophy underpins the founding of the REACH Society, created out of frustration with failed initiatives and a conviction that communities must take responsibility for inspiring their young people. Over 15 years, REACH has reached more than 50,000 young people nationwide. What stayed with me most was Dwain’s simple but powerful message: Explore, Discover, Learn, and Succeed — and his advice to his 12-year-old self, which feels relevant to all of us: don’t worry too much about the future, just keep going.
