Mapping Memory, Identity, and Sustainable Futures: How GIS and the SPECA KPS Project, in Collaboration with LRR Geospatial Consultancy, Are Transforming Community Planning Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide a powerful framework for mapping not only land and physical resources, but also the cultural and social histories that shape community identity. By capturing layers of cultural memory, such as historical sites, cultural landscapes, and the evolution of settlements over time, GIS creates an interactive record that supports both preservation and sustainable development. This type of cultural mapping strengthens inclusive planning by revealing how people use spaces, identifying areas of emotional or historical value, and showing where development has influenced cultural land or cultural heritage. Through this insight, planners can better understand how land-use decisions affect vulnerable groups and ensure that community voices are central to future development strategies. Within this context, the SPECA KPS Project places education at the core of its approach. Its framework integrates formal, informal, non-formal, and traditional education, recognising that stories of land, heritage, and community development cannot be understood through formal systems alone. GIS provides the lens through which this full spectrum can be mapped and understood, bringing these diverse forms of knowledge together and making them visible and accessible. As global education increasingly integrates space and technology through curriculum planning and knowledge mobilisation, the conversation has evolved from STEM to STEAM, and now to STrEAM, where responsibility is a defining value. This responsibility shapes how technology is used, how communities are engaged, and how culture and land are respected. This foundational framework connects island communities to global digital opportunities. Aligned with this principle, the SPECA KPS Project perspective places responsibility at the centre of achieving inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods, especially as society transitions into the digital age. Montserrat is leading the way as the first country in the Caribbean Digital Transformation Zone, an initiative developed by the Space Pathways Ecosystem and launched at the UK Africa Trade Expo in London, October 2025. These pathways link the Caribbean with the UK, Africa, Ireland, the USA, and Canada, reflecting longstanding historical links and the continued movement of families, communities, and professionals. At its core, the SPECA KPS Project embodies generational stories and the travels of those who have shaped Montserrat’s global story, ensuring that memory, identity, and sustainable futures are mapped with precision and purpose.
