St Helena Bay #sthelenabay a sheltered fishing town on South Africa’s West Coast, north of Saldanha Bay. It lies along one of the few stretches of coastline in the country that faces north, which gives it calm waters and beautiful sunsets over the sea. The bay was named in 1497 by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who anchored there on his first voyage to India. For centuries, the area remained sparsely populated, used mainly by Khoikhoi communities and later by small-scale farmers and fishermen. In the 19th and 20th centuries, St Helena Bay grew steadily as a fishing centre, particularly for sardines (pilchards), anchovies, and rock lobster. The cold Benguela Current makes the waters rich in marine life, supporting both commercial and small-scale fishing industries. Fish processing factories were established, shaping the town’s economy and character. Today, St Helena Bay remains strongly connected to the sea. Fishing is still central to the local economy, alongside aquaculture and growing residential and holiday developments. It is known for whale and dolphin sightings, birdlife, wildflowers in spring, and its relaxed West Coast lifestyle. The town combines working-harbour authenticity with increasing appeal as a peaceful coastal destination. #sthelenabaai #SouthAfricaDroneFootage #SouthAfricaAerialViews #SouthAfricaTravel #SouthAfricaTowns #HistoricChurchesSouthAfrica #SmallTownSouthAfrica #CinematicDroneFootage #LensOverSouthAfrica #SouthAfricaFromAbove #DroneViewsOfSouthAfrica
