Mid-March birding along the beautiful Rideau River in Ottawa, Ontario led to an exciting find — a rare Barrow’s Goldeneye! While this striking diving duck is common in western North America, sightings in eastern Ontario are always special and attract plenty of local birders. In this video I walk along the Rideau River during early spring migration, scanning through flocks of waterfowl until the distinctive Barrow’s Goldeneye appears among the more common ducks. Early spring can be an excellent time for birding in Ottawa as rivers begin to open up and migrating waterfowl move through the region.
