I questioned the Minister for Children, Roderic O’Gorman on the shocking report into child protection failures in the Direct Provision system. In April, the Ombudsman for Children’s published its investigation Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision, which found a range of child protection and welfare concerns, including staff members working in the centre had not been vetted to work with children and a failure to report a serious child protection concern. The Ombudsman for Children’s report highlighted systemic faults in the direct provision system. The report is unambiguous: the direct provision model ‘does not have the best interests of children, or the protection and promotion of the human rights of child refugees at its core.’ Many asylum seekers are vulnerable people with language barriers, lack of social supports, and the traumas of forced migration. There are inherent power imbalances between staff and residents which is clearly found in this report with one parent fearful to take legitimate complaints due to the risk of reprisals and the weaponisiation of child protection.
