Cwtch (a Welsh word meaning hug, pronounced Cootch) is a 5 week Grey-Headed Flying-Fox pup who was found hanging alone in a colony down the coast. He came to me for assessment since he wasn't using one leg. I got the usual xrays of pelvis and spine and lower limbs to see what was going on with the little guy, but nothing showed up on x-ray. I was quite stumped as to what was going on, unsure if he was "just" a head injury or if there was something going on internally causing his issues. He remained a happy little boy, quite bright and alert, but not moving one leg. I could see that he had bilateral hernias, which means we feed them more frequently with smaller amounts per feed so as not to increase the pressure in his abdomen forcing his bowel to herniate out his inguinal canal. We also feed them more vertically, head down and bum up, to reduce the intra abdominal pressure against the weakness in the inguinal canal. The canal tightens up after a week or 2 and the little (boy) batties get on with their lives. Some, however, end up with a strangulated hernia and either die or need surgery to excise the strangled bit and tuck the errant bits bowel back into the abdomen and strengthen the abdominal wall where the canal exits. I was inundated, so I moved this little guy to a carer in the country with good vet access if required. His hernias gradually resolved, and he started using his leg again. He was released with a bunch of other orphans his age, when he was 18 weeks old. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. jenny@tolgabathospital.org
