Christopher Baxter - Piano In the words of the composer, "in these ten short pieces are reflected some of the varied and beautiful aspects of nature. Rustling wind, stirring life, running stream and glowing sky all lend from their rich treasuries gems of thought and inspiration." Composed in 1933, each of these wonderful miniatures were given descriptive titles and quotes of various poems to stir the imagination. Like many pianists, I first encountered the music of Walter Carroll the ABRSM grade syllabi, and was instantly captivated by the perfect balance between refined craftsmanship and imagination. Carroll was renowned in his lifetime for his commitment to the training of music teachers - quick to realise that being a virtuoso performer did not automatically make for having the ability to teach effectively. Much of his musical activity was devoted to training musicians in the art of teaching. The many suites of piano pieces were all composed as teaching material in response to what Carroll felt was a lack of inspired material for children, and a vast range of expressive and technical devices are explored, along with beautiful melodic and harmonic invention. As a teacher, I never tire of exploring these pieces with my students, and as an ABRSM examiner, I'm delighted to hear these pieces presented by piano students across the globe. 1 - Glow-Worms ("And if the moon doth hide her head The glow-worm lights us home to bed." - Old Poem) 2 - The Tiger Moth ("Float in the shadow of night, Figured and blotted with velvet." - Fox) 3 - Shadows ("Only the night air, and the dream; Only the far, sweet-smelling wave." - Johnson) 4 - By Crystal Stream ("'Mid the quivering light 'tis ours to play, Dancing to the cadence of the stream." - Coleridge) 5 - The Oak ("The fat earth fed thy branchy root That under deeply strikes." - Tennyson) 6 - Shepherd's Pipe (He murmured near the running brooks A music sweeter than their own." - Wordsworth) 7 - Sunrise ("Full many a glorious morning I have seen, Flatter the mountain tops with sovereign eye." - Shakespeare) 8 - Iris ("Search the depths of an Indian mine, Where are the colours to match with mine?" - L.E.L. 9 - Summer Wind (I learned of thy tempestuous swell, The music of thy softer tone." - Holmes 10 - Ripples ("Sing, little river, this sweet morn, Sing of the hills where thou wast born." - Buchanan)
