John Hearne (1937 - ) Pictograms for Solo Piano I - Adagio II - Presto III - Andante, molto rubato; Molto languido IV - Presto commodo; Grandioso V - Largo (In Memoriam Douglas McKerrell) VI - Allegro alla breve The composer writes - “These short pieces are not intended as a suite, but were written at the request of IVAN ILIC for inclusion in a programme that featured some of Debussy's Préludes. He asked for three: I wrote six! As a result, Nos. 1, 3, and 6 were premièred in Ivan's Scottish tour in November 2007. No titles were given to the pieces, but the audiences were asked for suggestions, and produced some very intriguing responses. “No.5 is dedicated to the memory of Douglas McKerrell, a prominent Scottish lawyer and a personal friend who was passionate about piano music and who was Chairman of the Scottish International Piano Competition. He died after a short illness in October 2007. Part of this piece was sketched during a visit to Douglas and his family on the Isle of Arran in July 2007.” I first met John Hearne when I was a student of Robert Howie - I was turning pages in a concert for Mr Howie in which he gave the first performance of John’s The Ballad of the Buchan Lady, (a recording of this will follow soon), and I was immediately captivated by the melodically and harmonically inventive and evocative music. Since then I have met John on numerous occasions across the years and he has always been very supportive and encouraging. Following one concert I gave, he presented me with the score of Pictograms, and I was happy to programme the whole set for their first complete performance in February 2016. John takes Debussy’s idea of adding suggestive titles at the ends of his Préludes one step further - small postcards were distributed amongst the audience and the audience members were invited to suggest their own titles. I’ve included a few of my favourite suggestions from the premiere performance below, but by all means do come up with your own and feel free to add them in the comments! I - Sunday morning; Melting icicles; Central heating problems… II - Negotiating the traffic; Movement - birds; Crossroads III - In a cave, water dripping; Crystal; Conversation IV - Chase; Cascade; Views from the mountain road V - Wandering in a lonely place; Fairytale; Musings VI - Frivolous; Grasshopper; Particles
