Legislative Auditor Jim Nobles appeared before the Senate Human Services Reform Committee Wednesday, March 13, to release his investigation into fraudulent activity within the state's Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). The program provides state assistance to low income families seeking help to cover day care costs. The auditor's investigation into the program was in response to a broadcast media report indicating that program money, about $100 million dollars, was being stolen and used to fund terrorist activities overseas. Auditor Jim Nobles said that their investigation could not substantiate those claims, but program fraud likely exceeds the nearly $6 million dollars identified by local prosecutors. Following the presentation, lawmakers both criticized the media report for false information and urged the Department of Human Services to further investigate fraudulent use of the money.
