This week, we rejoin Jesus at the home of a Pharisee as he moves from exposing the internal corruption of false religion to pronouncing judgment on those who teach and enforce it. As the lawyers object to His rebuke, the Lord reveals how false light, when given authority, becomes false religion that crushes people with legalistic burdens, cloaks inner rebellion in outward orthodoxy, and ultimately blocks access to salvation by removing the key of knowledge. We will see that false religion is not merely hypocrisy but a kind of spiritual obstruction that adds further guilt and results in hardened hostility toward Christ Himself. This passage calls all men and women to reject every man-made system and to cling to Christ alone, the only one who can open the way to God.
