Note that this is the 2005 version of Dig Dug Arrangement, originally released as part of the PSP Namco Museums. This is not to be confused with the arcade version of Dig Dug Arrangement from 1996, from Namco Classic Collection Vol. 2. Who doesn't love Dig Dug? The good 'ol pump-wearing, rock dropping killing machine is back, in an upscaled and polished environment. It's a smooth upgrade to the original, and certainly a more approachable game than the 1996 variant, much like the other Arrangement titles on this collection. Graphics are great, music is catchy despite the songs being short, and gameplay isn't too bad. In terms of gameplay, it's Dig Dug. You drop rocks on enemies or blow them up with your pump. Simple gameplay with a simple purpose. This remake does have a handful of power-ups, including boots that make you run faster, shovels and drills that let you drill faster and through harder surfaces, a shield that gives you one hit of immunity to rocks, an enhanced pump that can blow up enemies quicker, and an orange puff thing that pumps all enemies on screen. You can have up to four power ups in your inventory at a time and can swap between them using the L and R buttons. There's also some new stage gimmicks, such as fans that can push enemies into a wall or freeze them in blocks of ice, pools of water and lava that can insta-kill you or the enemies, and rocks that can travel on or through terrain. What I don't get are the mini Taizos that you can blow up, as they don't seem to do much of anything. Fruits are hidden behind rocks in this game, and there's usually one per level. Once per world, however, there is an additional fruit that awards extra points if grabbed. Each world has a boss at the end, though most of them aren't that interesting. The one thing I find finicky about this game are how the enemies behave. My main issue with them is how they move through dirt. In the original Dig Dug, their movement was smooth and could be predicted, but not so much in this game. They also move incredibly slowly in worlds 2 and 3, making it take forever. Their hitboxes also make it harder to drop rocks on them sometimes, which is a bit of a problem for the score-obsessed jocks such as I. It's easy for them to hang up on you in some of the later worlds, especially the enemies that can dig through dirt like you can. As with the other Arrangement titles, Hard mode doesn't really do much to make the game more difficult, but the enemies have a tendency to be pests at times. The mechanics of digging in this game are also strange; it's easy to not fully dig out something you wanted to open up. Overall, fun title that is satisfying to play through. Hell, the credits theme is worth it all on its own. Such nostalgia Played on my PSP 3000 via Namco Museum Battle Collection, using PSP Composite cables to play and record it from my TV.
