Why don't we learn Queer history in school? Here are all the stories that you should know and yet don't! In the second episode of the Betches Sup series ‘Queerantine History’, Bryan is joined by Chris Burns (aka Fat Carrie Bradshaw) to tell the story of Albert Cashier, a transgender man who volunteered and fought for the Union in the Civil War. Then, they discuss the stories around former president James Buchanan, the quote "only bachelor president" (eye roll) and his relationship with another man. Lastly, they talk about former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her relationship with a female reporter during her time in the White House. Albert Cashier was born on Christmas Day in Ireland as Jennie Irene Hodgers in December 1843 and as a child later immigrated to Illinois. Even before enlisting and after his mother died, Cashier began identifying as male so he could live independently. When the Civil war broke out and Lincoln called for volunteers, Cashier enlisted under his new name Albert Cashier and fought for the Union army for 3 over years in Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee and Louisiana, marching almost 10,000 miles. Gerhard P Clausius, a Belvidere amateur historian, wrote in his 1958 essay The Little Soldier of the 95th that “In handling a musket in battle, he was the equal of any in the company After being honorably discharged, he lived as a man for another 50 years. It only became known that he was assigned female at birth towards the end of his life but was buried under the name Albert Cashier nonetheless. This is just 1 example of at least 250 people who dressed as men to fight in the Civil War, but one of the instances we know that they went on to live as a man after ward. We only know Albert Cashier was assigned female at birth because later in life he was injured and a physician discovered his birth sex. So it’s truly wild that the current administration thinks that transgender people shouldn’t serve in our military when they have literally already been doing it for 100s of years. Check out our previous episode here all about Strome DeLarverie: • Queerantine History: The Story of Stormé D... Storme DeLarverie was a singer, a circus performer, a guardian, a bodyguard for the Chicago mob, a drag king, and a lesbian activist who may or may not have thrown the first punch at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Storme was born in New Orleans in 1920 to a black mother and a white father. Her mother was a servant in her father's home. While she celebrated her birthday on December 20th, her actual birthday is unknown, because of the circumstances of her birth she never obtained a birth certificate. Growing up in New Orleans as a biracial girl who didn't fit the mold of either race or what it meant to be traditionally "girly" she was bullied heavily until she moved to Chicago at age 18. She sang at clubs and lounges dressed as a woman in the 1940s, she even spent time working security for the mob until she visited Miami and became a Drag King. Need more Betches Sup?
