We are in northern Togo, KOUTAMMAKOU near the border with Benin, Land of the Batammariba— in a traditional village BASAMBA where people still live by ancient rules of land, spirits, and ancestors. There is almost no modern infrastructure here, but there is something much stronger: a deep connection to nature and tradition. We came to see the famous Tata Somba (Tata Taberma) houses — clay fortress-like homes that look as if they grew directly from the earth. In the local animist tradition, a house cannot be built just anywhere. Before construction begins, a ritual is performed to choose the right place. Permission must be asked from the land and the spirits, and only if the space “accepts” the person can the home be built. Nearby stands a massive hollow baobab with a circumference of about 25 meters. You can actually step inside. These trees are considered sacred — symbols of protection, memory, and ancestral presence. In this region, the baobab is sometimes called a “house-tree,” and it can truly serve as a shelter for people. This journey takes us into a world where animism is still part of everyday life: where dance strengthens the community, rituals guide important decisions, and a home is not just walls, but a sacred space that must feel right. #Togo, #Koutammakou, #Batammariba, #TataSomba, #TataTaberma, #WestAfrica, #AfricanArchitecture, #SacredArchitecture, #Animism, #BaobabTree, #TraditionalVillage, #CulturalTravel, #TribalAfrica, #EthnographicTravel, #VernacularArchitecture, #ArchitectureOfTheWorld, #AfricaTravel, #HiddenAfrica, #TravelDocumentary, #CulturalHeritage, #UNESCO, #yanaveselovatravel
