The 1980s era styling is unmistakable as cars carried a classic look that was combined with modernized fuel injected engines, setting up the new golden age of hot rodding that is still thriving today. The paradigm of that era is the Buick Grand National as the engineers stuffed a turbocharged V-6 in a luxury sedan and then sent it out to the streets to clean up the V-8 powered Corvettes, Camaros, and Mustangs. Over thirty years later John Nguyen is upholding that tradition, except his Grand National is way beyond anything the Buick team had ever imagined. The G-body features an SFI-certified cage due to its ability to terrorize drag strips throughout Texas in the popular X275 category and other small-tire shootouts. The V-6 is long gone and replacing it is a small-block Chevy that is based on a Brodix aluminum engine block. A single 88mm turbocharger has been fastened to it and Nguyen turned to FuelTech to continue with the car’s high-tech heritage. He selected the FT600 engine management system, an ECU that integrates key controllers and functions that are vital in the high-stakes game of small-tire drag racing. The FT600 offers exceptional features over many other brands, namely standard functions that are normally add-on components for most other engine management systems. Those include sequential injection and ignition, O2 closed loop, Traction Control, Data Logger, Delay Box, Boost Controller, and much more. The ECU box doubles up as an LCD display with a touchscreen showing real-time data and allowing the user to make adjustments without a PC connection. Each FT Power ECU—FT600, FT550, FT550LITE, and FT450—include data logging capabilities, making each unit a true all-in-one system. From small-tire shootouts to big-money X275 competition, its capabilities are the reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere Like the video?
