Building on his insightful classic, The Island at the Center of the World, Shorto recounts the 1664 English takeover that ended Dutch rule and marked the birth of New York. Drawing from newly translated materials, Taking Manhattan tells the complex story of New York City’s founding. It highlights what motivated the invasion of 1664, how the English introduced the polarization that characterizes American society, and the neglected histories of religious refugees, Indigenous tribes, and free and enslaved Africans.
