“In this video, we’re going to take a first look at second-order partial differential equations. Partial differential equations, or PDEs, arise when a function depends on more than one independent variable, and we study how that function changes with respect to those variables. Second-order PDEs are especially important because they appear naturally in many real-world problems—such as heat conduction, wave motion, fluid flow, and electrostatics. What makes them ‘second order’ is that the highest derivatives involved are second-order partial derivatives. We’ll begin by understanding the general form of a second-order PDE, and then see how these equations can be classified into different types—elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic—based on their structure. This classification helps us predict the behavior of solutions and choose appropriate methods to solve them.”
