#mentalhealth #incels #malementalhealth #masculinity #malerolemodels #psychology #misogyny #andrewtate #positivemasculinity Watch as educational and child psychologist, Dr. Peter D'Lima speaks with William Costello, an evolutionary psychology researcher who has conducted one of the largest studies on young men who identify as incels (involuntary celibates). Incels perceive themselves as ineffective in sexual and romantic relationships and are known for their online misogynistic behaviour. They are also often treated with contempt in society. William posits that this group of young men are disenfranchised, lonely with high levels of poor mental health and a low belief in their ability to be successful in life. We consider together the implications for male mental health and well-being more generally, especially in an online world of often negative male role models who have grown in popularity recently. We also talk about the Magnificent Boys Project, a programme developed by Not The Easy Way to help teenage boys grapple with issues affecting boys and men today, seek out positive role models, and become a man who contributes positively to society. 2:00 Perceived inability to form sexual or romantic relationships 3:07 Poor mental health, suicidality, and undiagnosed autism 5:17 Missed out on teenage romance 7:21 Get the goal, get the girl 10:29 Validate my real social pain 11:42 What do incels gain from their identity? 12:47 Dating has evolved 15:04 Emotional pain can look ugly 16:11 Lonely or misogynistic? 18:12 Increase their value, reduce misogyny 20:18 Disproportionate impact of a minority of incels 23:32 Impact of rejection on a mass scale 25:31 What do boys need to know about attraction and romance? 26:54 Find your niche 28:09 They feel it's not worth the pain 28:53 Magnificent Boys Project 29:54 How might women interpret incel objectives? 31:10 It's not just about sex; it's about being chosen 32:13 They're trying to prove themselves right: society hates them 33:17 Is there any positive encouragement from within the group? 33:48 Take the black pill and give up! 33:46 An addiction to a way of seeing the world 36:01 Women are more at risk from jealous or insecure boyfriends. 37:36 First challenging beliefs about romance; next incremental exposure 38:31 Tackling heightened avoidance at their own pace 38:51 Noticing entitled thoughts or beliefs 39:21 No outlet to learn about this in a healthy way 41:23 Laudable goal: To help young men become desirable partners 42:00 Perspective-taking will help both sexes 43:25 Male role models & fatherlessness 44:52 Real life role models to online role models 47:48 Young male syndrome: an evolutionary perspective 48:29 The internet is their outlet for their aggression 49:24 Sedating effect of the internet? 49:38 The impact of pornography on beliefs? 50:06 Dulls motivation to find real-life partners 50:46 Overestimating the sexual/romantic success of others 51:41 Hearing others' views can challenge initial thoughts or beliefs indirectly 53:06 Bespoke mental health intervention needed 53:56 Renaissance of more positive male role models 55:20 Talk will happen when given an appropriate platform 55:47 Who knew incels were such a charitable bunch? 57:05 Thank you Will!
