Mykonos still provides one of the most popular stop off points for visitors to the Cyclades Islands. With its international airport, it is also one of the places you will depart from when visiting neighbouring islands. Also known as Chora, the towns winding streets were developed to weaken the strong Meltemi winds which the islands experience during the summer months. The airport is located a short taxi ride from the main town which makes it an ideal place to base yourself for a couple of nights. The main port is also next door to the town and is accessible by water taxi from the old port. Mykonos town has its own small beach which is located right in the centre of town with views of the many cruise ships which visit the island. This means that the island can get busy in the high season with many of the cruise ship passengers visiting the town. At the end of the beach there is a small fish market and to the south of here, many of the small streets wind their way all the way up to the bus terminus. Here you will also find taxies. A few must see areas in the town are the windmills, located to the west of town. The six windmills overlook the Little Venice area, one of the most photographed areas on the island. The church of Panagia Paraportiani is also worth a visit. Construction began in the fifteenth century and it’s reputed to be the oldest in the Cyclades. Taking a stroll through the streets, you will find a range of shops selling anything from designer garments to icons and more affordable souvenirs. The main concentration of shops can be found in the area behind little Venice and also in the streets leading up to the bus station. The windmills can provide a great location for a sunset after which you can head back into town to experience some of the great restaurants in Chora. Explore some of the back streets where you will find the prices to be more reasonable for both the shops and the Tavernas. Rooms can be found throughout the town with some being located close to the bus terminal and local to all of the shops and Restaurants. Alternatively, stay in the centre with all of the action right on your doorstep. Mykonos town can provides a great base for onward travel with the Ferry terminal being located close to the town.
