WPIX Channel 11 began broadcasting in New York City on June 15, 1948, as the city's second independent station, initially owned by the Chicago Daily News (the publisher of the "picture newspaper" New York Daily News, from which the station's name, PIX, was derived) and later by Tribune Company. The station established a reputation for children's programming and movies, including broadcasts of the New York Yankees and the invention of the instant replay during a Yankees broadcast in 1959. After operating as a superstation and an affiliate of The WB Television Network, WPIX became a CW affiliate and was bought by Mission Broadcasting in 2020, with the station now operated by Nexstar Media Group. Founding and Early Years (1948-1970s) Launch: WPIX signed on as a New York City independent station on June 15, 1948. Origins: The station was founded by the Tribune Company, whose newspaper, the New York Daily News, was known as the city's "picture newspaper". The station's name, PIX, was a nod to this. Programming: WPIX was a pioneer in children's programming and was known for its extensive film library, which went beyond typical low-budget fare. Sports History: The station has a storied history with New York sports, airing the New York Yankees since 1951. A major innovation, the instant replay, was invented during a Yankees broadcast on WPIX in 1959. Becoming a Superstation and Rebranding (1970s-1990s) "11 Alive": From 1976 to 1986, WPIX branded itself as "11 Alive". Satellite Broadcast: In 1978, WPIX launched on satellite, becoming a regional superstation. 24-Hour Operations: By 1980, the station began operating 24 hours a day. Turnaround and Decline: After a period of decline in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the station, under new management in 1989, began a turnaround, eventually leading it to become the market's top independent station again.
