In 1996 Apple was searching for a modern replacement for the aging classic Mac OS. One of the most intriguing candidates came from a small company called Be, Inc. Their operating system, BeOS, was built from the ground up for performance, with preemptive multitasking, symmetric multiprocessing, and a strong multimedia architecture. In this episode we explore the origins of BeOS and the unusual hardware it first ran on: the dual-CPU BeBox with its iconic “Blinkenlights” and experimental GeekPort. We look at why BeOS impressed reviewers with its heavily multithreaded design, how it was later ported to PowerPC Macintosh systems, and why Apple ultimately chose NeXTSTEP instead — a decision that would eventually lead to Mac OS X. This is part 1 of the story about the operating system that almost changed Apple’s future.
