Baby Boy joins Collin at SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals to learn the “Off” Game and How to Stop Unwanted Jumping. This video guides you through the process of introducing dogs to a command to restrain jumping, pawing, nudging, and other unwanted or unprompted physical interactions. The goal of this game is to teach dogs how to withdraw from your personal space on cue. This is what trainers call a "pure reward training" exercise, in that we are presenting the dog with the opportunity to solve a simple puzzle in order to get rewarded and learn a new behavior. This can require more patience than luring them with a treat, but the behavior we're looking for is usually a simple and natural one that we expect dogs will try. Once the learning process begins though, many dogs pick up pure reward training games very quickly, because we let them problem solve and choose which behavior to use, and then we rewarded it (so it's kind of like they think it was all their idea!) Start the game with a closed hand full of nice treats. Present it to the dog at their face level, and say the verbal cue that you’ll be using - “Off” - every 10 or 15 seconds. The dog will likely nudge, paw, lick, nibble, etc at your hand while trying to figure out how to get the treats. Wait until the dog ceases contact with your hand for at least a moment, then quickly praise and reward them with a treat from your other hand. Repeat this several times until you see that the dog is consistently withdrawing from your hand when prompted. At that point, you may lift the hand higher into the air, or practice other body language or activities that make your dog want to jump. Simply start the exercise exactly the same way but without treats in your hand, for instance, by holding a toy as seen in the video. The more that you play this game and rehearse it in different ways, the better your dog will get at greeting people and interacting with them with all four paws on the ground.
