1999. A dull & gloomy period in Scorpions' career. What was left of Hard Rock & Classic Rock, just barely survived the onslaught of grunge & alternative in mid 1990s. & at the same time; facing the rise of pop, hiphop & Nu Metal. Rudolf Schenker & Klaus Meine turned 51yrs old at the time. & Scorpions as a band just passed their 34th year of playing since 1965. It was as if they were having mid life crisis & unsure of what the road ahead lies for them. Best they can do, was to explore along the current trend & see where it leads to. The album cover pretty much shows it all. It was dark & full of uncertainty. The so called 'soft', mainstream-friendly approach & explorative path they've took, started with Pure Instinct album in 1996, went full circle with Eye II Eye album. Eye II Eye was despised by 'vocal majority' of long time fans & critics alike. Long before Metallica came with St. Anger, Scorps hv had their own fair share of craziness - although the fans' backlash was not as hard as St. Anger. Around the year 1999 - 2000 Scorps wasn't in the same level of public limelight as they were in the 1980s - Making it easier for them to just throw this album into the casket & Bury it forever. Never to be mentioned again. As if it never existed. In fact only 1 song from this album got into the tour Setlist past the year 2004. That would be 'A Moment In A Million Years' that was played acoustically between 2007 - 2009ish. They took the risk & it didn't pay off. A full 360 turn from the Scorps dna we once knew. What was left of the fanbase at the time, either split or simply stopped caring. European, Russia, South America & Asian Market/Fanbase kept them going through this dark period. They still managed to pull off sold out arena shows & sold a good amount of records in those said regions. Some even reached Platinum & Gold standards. I'd like to believe if it wasn't for these dedicated fans, the history of Scorps as we knew it today would've been different. They'll probably go on hiatus / break; just like many hair metal & classic rock bands did in early 2000s. With all the Hatred on this album, one needs to remember it took some balls & courage on the bands' part to step outside of their comfort zone & tried something new. They couldn't live with the "what ifs". This is the type of album that will make the fans either go "f*ck, I hate it", or "yeah I remember it. it was different. Its OK for me". With that being said. This is my fav track from the album. With catchy Riffs that can easily fit into classic album like Blackout, or even few modern day albums they've released recently. & Thank god for Unbreakable in 2004. If Scorps didn't take this path in late 1990s, the comeback in 2004 wouldn't be as special. So there's that. --- Guitar : Epiphone 1958 Reissue Korina Flying V Effects : Boss GT1; Death Patch Amp : Boss Katana 100 (Clean Channel) Audio Track : Scorpions - Mind Like A Tree (Eye II Eye, 1999) Audio Track & Images belong to Scorpions & their respective owners.
