Doug Wilber and I want to emphasize that we are not criticizing institutional care itself. Instead, we’re asking listeners to understand its origins and recognize the urgent need for evolution. AARP reports that 77% of adults want to age in place, yet only 9% receive the in home services that would allow them to do so. At the same time, U.S. Census data shows that while 4–5% of adults live in nursing facilities at any moment, 25–40% will require nursing home care at some point in their lives or similar services at home. In Episode #1, Doug offers a concise history of institutional living—from poor houses to orphanages to sanitariums—and how those early structures shaped today’s nursing facilities. With families living farther apart and juggling demanding lives, many older adults are placed in facilities earlier than necessary. This isn’t about blame; it’s about understanding the pressures that shape these decisions and exploring better options. We invite you to listen, reflect, and join the conversation as this series unfolds.
