I tried something new for the opening — it actually feels a bit like the intro of Dune. Since Kumbum Monastery is also called “the Maitreya Monastery of a Hundred Thousand Lion’s Roar Buddhas,” I used a track named Lion’s Roar Chant for the beginning. It fit surprisingly well. The music was so powerful that I realized I didn’t need any ambient sound at all. So, besides the main track, I added some deep drums to help with the cuts, and during the title card I used dungchen, the long Tibetan horns I recorded at the monastery. It blended perfectly. Later, I slowly shifted the soundscape into the Six-Syllable Mantra, partly to ease the mood and partly to introduce the mantra written on the prayer wheels — what’s sung and what’s spinning are the same thing. Maybe I was a bit inspired by 食贫道 too, so I added some historical notes to keep it from feeling too plain. Anyway, huge thanks to Nolan for showing me around Qinghai. Hope next time I can have more time to shoot. Shot on Fujifilm XH2S Lens: Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 Fujifilm 55-200mm f3.5-4.8 Edited and Colored using DaVinci Resolve Music: 狮吼荡 · 文殊菩萨心咒, 甘露净 · 六字大明咒 - 三强
