Heavy machinery and workers in the factory, including men women and children. Good footage of people at work. [Factory was in Bermondsey, SE London] Intertitle: Getting up steam. Large coal-burning furnaces, two men stoking, heaps of coal in foreground; pan round; a man on a ladder with a hose (which appears to be spraying steam), apparently cleaning one of the furnaces; a man in a white jacket enters from R, walks away from us, towards centre of shot; a man climbs a spiral stair round one of the furnaces. Intertitle: Milk and flour arriving. In the yard (high brick walls, partly in bright sunshine), a wagon of milkchurns - sign saying 'DUNMOW' (?) on side, more churns on ground; a man starts to unload a churn; man walks in front of camera, R to L; men appear in doorway - two in white caps - and lift a churn off; man climbs on wagon to help, as the others unload another churn - they are clearly very heavy; three men in caps and aprons wheel in a trolley with two large wheels, on which are four crates of what may be eggs; they start to unlaod the crates. A man, in cap and apron, standing at the rear of a wagon laden with sacks of flour, ties a rope to a sack which is ten hoisted up out of shot, past one of four windows facing the yard; there is a sign on the wall behind him, but it cannot be read; he looks up, and the rope descends, he ties another sack, and it lifts again; he gathers the top of another sack, the rope descends again, and the third sack rises out of shot. Intertitle: 'Collecting ingredients.' Inside the bakery - running away L to R are three open-topped hoppers, at one of which a man in white cap and apron is bending over; on the wall behind are stacks of cans, five high; at R foreground is a large black set of scales, with a number of large weights; behind, a baker wheels off a trolley laden with dough; men come in with very large flour sacks (the height of their chests); on the nearest sack is printed 'PEAK FREEN & . . . LONDON 189. . .'; a man - the only one on screen not wearing white cap and apron - assists another to empty a sack into a hopper; at R, a baker piles large lumps of dough into the pan of the scales, then lifts off the pan and tips into into a hopper; man folds up empty flour sack, walks off to L with it; camera pans slightly to R, man piles more dough into scale pan, empties it into hopper - he is loading the pan from a huge pile of dough behind him; another sack of flour is wheeled in on a trolley; the baker tips a panload of dough into the hopper; a bearded baker comes in with a large tin, puts it down off screen at L, walks back; at back, a man moves an upright barrel; at L a man pokes the mixture in the hopper with a pole; another sack of flour is wheeled in on a trolley. Intertitle: 'Making biscuits. General view.' Factory floor scene, several men attending machinery, running from belts overhead; in foreground one of the machines has what looks like a ship's wheel; all the men are in aprons, most in white caps, some in dark caps; some of those in attendance look like boys of 12 or 13; camera pans slowly to L; the nearest baker is in shirt-sleeves and braces, below his apron; he moves a number of sheets of rolled gough into a table behind him; behind him a baker pulls a heavy lever. Intertitle: 'Rolling out dough.' A baker attends a large rolling machine, as rolled dough extends on a belt R to L; he pulls a lever, the dough reverses under the roller, and he dusts the bed with flour; pulling the lever again, thinner dough rolls out in folds; the cycle repeats; the next time the dough comes out he lefts the end of the roll and slices off a piece - perhaps 2' x 1' - then another, perhaps 2' x 2', which he removes and places behind him - he then repeats this last process four times. Intertitle: 'Making Brighton biscuits.' At left, a man rapidly stamps out a line of biscuits, collecting several in his left hand which he then puts in a pile at L foreground, where a woman in apron... Huntley Film Archives is a film library holding tens of thousands of films. The large majority of the films are documentaries. Films cover a wide range of subjects and production dates range from the 1890’s to the 2020’s. As with all libraries we make no judgement on the content of our holdings and make them available for educational purposes for all to see. Films may have content or express opinions some may think inappropriate or offensive, but it is not the work of a library to censor educational resources. Films should be viewed with historical objectivity and within a context relevant to the times in which they were produced
