But in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, the words Father (אב / אַבָּא / Abba / Av) and Son (בן / בר / Ben / Bar) are often used symbolically, not literally. In Middle Eastern and Near East cultures, the word "Son" and "Father" have more than a literal interpretation, one that Greek and Latin speakers did not understand. They took it to mean literal "father" and "son", due to the difference in language and culture. In Hebrew: "av" (אָב) and in Aramaic: "abba" (אַבָּא) are the terms for "father" and mean more than "father" in the literal sense. The term "father" means: • Someone with authority, guidance, or a protective role. • Founder/originator, origin of a lineage, craft, or people. • Religious leaders, mentors, or kings could be called “father.” In Hebrew: "ben" (בֵּן) and in Aramaic: "bar/breh" (בְּרֵהּ/בַּר) are the terms for "son/his son" and mean more than "son" in the literal sense. The term "son" means: • Follower or disciple, someone under guidance, like a student or apprentice. • Successor/heir; Next in line politically or spiritually. • Member of a group: “Sons of Israel,” “sons of the prophets,” etc. This can be seen in other instances in the Bible, especially in scripture where Jesus is not mentioned: In Daniel 5, Belshazzar is called the “son” of Nebuchadnezzar, even though history shows they weren’t biologically related. “Son” here means successor. Elisha calls Elijah “my father” (2 Kings 2:12), though Elijah wasn’t his parent — “Father” meant mentor or spiritual guide. Jubal is called the “father of all musicians” (Genesis 4:21), clearly meaning originator, not biological dad. In the New Testament, Jesus calls God “Abba,” meaning source, protector, and caretaker, not a biological father. Believers are called “sons of God” (Matthew 5:9, Romans 8:14), and John and James are “sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17). These phrases show that “father” and “son” were titles of relationship, closeness, or likeness, not literal family ties. This context aligns more closely with Jewish and Islamic understandings of Jesus — that he was a servant and Prophet of God, not a literal “begotten” son. These issues arise in all religions when people step away from scripture. A quick read thru of the Bible will show how often the term "Son" and "Father" are used in a non-literal sense. When we rely on ill informed people to lead us, we only get lead astray. When we allow God and His words alone to lead us, we reach Salvation.
