Makhosazane Sekgwama || Emerging Creatives 2020

Meet Makhosazane Sekgwama, one of the 50 gifted up-and-coming creatives, from students of design to artists and photographers, who were chosen to be part of Design Indaba’s annual Emerging Creatives programme class of 2020 Makhosazane is a fiber artist that specialises in crochet product design. Growing up in a family of artisans, her work is influenced by the natural landscapes of KZN, an area where she spent most of her formative years. Her company ROSA HANDMADE creates homeware products such as baskets, potplant covers, pouffes, throws and rugs. Her products are handmade using recycled cotton fabric materials from local clothing industries. For Sekgwama what makes a great artist is someone who is able to create and design products, that solve current environmental problems in the most aesthetically pleasing way. These products should be multifunctional, highly durable and environmentally friendly. Her most celebrated project to date is a patterned throw which she exhibited at Design Joburg 2019 as well as Maison & Objet Paris Design Week 2019.
